torrey pines city park
Dedicated in 1899 for public use and enjoyment, the 44-acre park on the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean, is unique and remarkable. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its association with wind-powered flight. In 1930, Charles Lindbergh discovered the site’s rare quality – one can take-off and land from this location – an attribute enjoyed today by hang gliders and paragliders and the crowds that come to watch. 10,000 years before Lindbergh, the native Kumeyaay lived on this land. The plan seeks to overcome decades of abuse starting with use for artillery training in World War II followed by unchecked parking and adjacent development that has left little protective native vegetation and caused significant bluff erosion. The General Development Plan has served to unite the soaring and earthbound community to raise funds for implementation and operations.
